You're Going to Get Rejected

Wm. Mulready - The Sonnet - 1839
Oil on canvas, 36 x 31 cm
Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Galleries are going to reject you, people are going to say insensitive things about your work, critics are going to ignore you and family members are going to plot to steal your painting time but you have to pick yourself up and go back at it.

(Cathie Harrison)

Today I got rejected.
Well, I knew I had a slimmer chance of acceptance,
but it,s still difficult to read the rejection letter.

Do you think rejection is a necessary part of an art career?

  1. Hi Kelly,

I totally understand you. I have been in the same situation before. Last time that happened to me I was so disappointed that I began painting hoping to leave my feelings out. I ended up creating a piece called "Wistful Poppies" and ironically it is a piece that always calls the attention at shows. In the end I was actually glad they rejected me.

I believe that if someone doesn't want to support your work there is a chance that they don't deserve to have you. I also take every rejection as a new learning experience, trying to understand what happened. Maybe in some other time they will actually change their mind and will be up to you to accept.

  2. Hi Maria,
thank you for your kind and very supportive comments. I knew I had a slim chance of acceptance because I applied in haste, but it's still disappointing. I am trying to turn it into a positive by thinking of how to improve my art. Not a total loss! There are worse things to endure.
    Thank you again!
