In 1590, the English colony of
Roanoke, mysteriously disappeared without a trace.
John White, who had been appointed governor of the tiny colony, was also an artist. Commissioned to paint the surroundings and people of the New World, his watercolors are the first known works of art to depict the indigineous people of early America.
